Summary of Role: As part of the Energy Team you will be primarily responsible for the on-site wiring of protection systems and control systems for transmission, distribution and power generation station projects. Modifications will be required to be electrically tested for safety, prior to commissioning by our commissioning Engineers. The role will obviously require travel to customer sites across the UK so flexibility and a willingness to travel is a must along with the technical competence required of this role.  Main Activities on and off site
  • The assembly and wiring of electrical protection systems and control systems for transmission of varying size and complexity using drawings, parts lists, and specifications. This shall include cable installations and terminations, glanding and termination of paired and multicore cables, Copper, and FO communications cables as necessary. 
  • Mechanical assembly of cubicles, framework, cable tray/ladder racking and desks. 
  • Assist with the hardware team with building and testing of the test rigs.
  • Work with the site manager / supervisor to ensure all site deliverables and materials are ready.
  • Quality of own work and rework identified during inspection and test, Assist with ITP check sheets with the site Supervisor / Manager
  • Updating issue logs and communicating directly with responsible Site Manager/supervisor, design, or commissioning engineers to resolve issues identified. 
  • Equipment builds and configuration inspection, LVD electrical safety checks, Earth bond continuity test, Point to point wiring checks, High voltage withstand test, Insulation resistance test, Power up, fusing and equipment functionality checks.
  • Any other equipment specific tests as detailed in the project hardware test specification for the temporary test rigs or customer cubicles. 
  • Appointed to complete isolations and work on test rigs at Capula.
Essential Requirements:
  • Have a Minimum 1-year experience of being a Site based wire person
  • Experience of E, C & I installation (Substation Control Systems, Protections systems or similar) on National Grid Sites
  • Able to read and interpret circuit diagrams, general assembly prints, wiring schedules and parts lists. 
  • Must be prepared to travel and work away at customer sites
  • Full UK Driving License.
Desirable Requirements:
  • Mechanical assembly of cubicles, framework, cable tray/ladder racking and desks.

Lead Protection and Control Systems Engineer -E-2025-08

Astute’s Power Team are working with the developers of a major Waste-to-Energy power generation project in the UK. As part of the operational leadership structure for the facility, they are looking to recruit a Maintenance Manager to take responsibility for maintenance department, focusing on plant availability, reliability and performance.  The new build facility, located in Irvine, North Ayrshire, when complete can produce ~17MW of power through the incineration of ~180,000 tonnes of waste per year. This project is expected to shortly enter commissioning phase and be operational in 2027. The Maintenance Manager will lead the Maintenance Strategy, managing multi-discipline Technicians and ensuring the facility operates in full compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements.   • Manage and run the maintenance department comprising of multi skilled engineers and technicians.

  • Ideally qualified with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Mechanical biased would be advantageous
  • HNC / HND / ONC Engineering qualifications will also be considered with relevant experience
  • IOSH or NEBOSH would be advantageous
Personal skills The Maintenance Manager role would suit someone who has:
  • At least five years maintenance / engineering management experience on a large process plant, ideally Power Generation - Candidates from other sources of Power, Utilities, Refineries, Petrochemical, COMAH etc will also be considered
  • Ideally you will have extensive experience of hands on maintenance in power generation, preferably with solid knowledge of pressure parts systems, rotating plant, steam plant and boilers
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation including PSSR, LOLER, PUWER etc
