Astute’s Power team looking to recruit a Mechanical Maintenance Technician on an OCGT Power Station on a 3/6-month contract basis for its plant in Birmingham from November 2025. The Mechanical Maintenance Technician role comes with a day rate of between £300-350 per day (Inside IR35).             Key skills  
  • Responsible for the planned, reactive and breakdown maintenance on mechanical assets such as pumps, gearboxes, valves, gas turbines etc
  • Work in line with maintenance techniques and practises
  • Assisting in plant developments
  • Involved in continuous improvement activities, plant inspections and fault investigation work.
  • Liaise with the operations team to ensure plant availability.
  • Ideally C&G/NVQ Level 3 minimum in Engineering or Apprentice qualified – Mechanically biased

  • Ensure that all relevant HSEQ requirements are incorporated into area of responsibility and that, in consultation with site management, HSE and commissioning team, HSE hazards are eliminated or mitigated to the extent practicable
  • Prepare and issue permits to Work and system isolations for works within the shift

Commissioning Shift Operator

Commissioning Shift Operator Start date - Jan 2024 Day rate - £400.00 to £440.00 (Outside IR35) Locations - Slough  Duration - 6 months About The Role We are currently recruiting for Commissioning Shift Operators to join the EPC Contractor on a fast paced new build Waste to Energy facilities based in Slough. Role responsibilities for the Commissioning Shift Operator positions reporting to the Commissioning Manager:
  • Ensures works within area of responsibility are executed in accordance with contract requirements, and conform with project time, budget and Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) requirements
  • Supports the commissioning team in all mechanical issues (filter cleaning and exchange, greasing, dismount pumps, replenish consumables etc.
  • Maintains all mechanical tools in a clean state and ready to use
  • Maintains and cleans the equipment of the plant
  • Reports any variations and issues to the Commissioning Manager
  • Liaises and coordinates with other project team members, in particular the Commissioning Manager, Commissioning Lead Engineers and shift team leaders.
  • Operate and control power generating equipment, including boilers, turbines, generators, reactors etc using semi automated control system and standalone equipment control panels
  • Control, operate, and maintain plant within the limits of the environmental operational permit
  • Control, operate and maintain plant to produce required electrical output
  • Control, operate and maintain plant to complete cold and hot commissioning in line with company and supplier procedures Control and maintain auxiliary equipment, such as pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, feedwater pumps, pre-heaters, filters, demineralised water plant etc, to supply water, fuel, lubricants, air, and auxiliary power
  • Carry out all operations in line with company procedures and guidelines Regulate equipment and conditions such as water levels, waste feeding, steam pressure etc based on data from field instrumentation and DCS Carry out required maintenance tasks in the field and record completion of maintenance tasks in shift books
  • Collect samples as required by the commissioning manager or lead engineer i.e. water, oil, waste, IBA etc
  • Inspect records, handover notes, and shift book entries, and communicate with other plant personnel to assess equipment operating status.
  • Communication with shift team leader in relation to any items which indicate unstable operation of the plant
  • Delivers Lessons Learned and feedback for current and future projects
  • Keeps the Commissioning Manager / Site Manager informed of all site-related activities
Qualifications and skills required for the Commissioning Shift Operator roles:
  • Knowledge of relevant HSEQ legal and management system requirements
  • Valid Safety Contractors Certificate (SCC), Safepass (ROI), CSCS or CCNSG card or equivalent
  • Solution oriented
  • G ood communicator
  • Ability to present ideas effectively
  • Minimum 2 to 5 years as a Control Room Operator (CRO), preferably in plants utilizing waste as fuel, biomass incineration, or fossil fuel technology, with proven knowledge of power plant equipment and systems.

Astute’s Power team is looking to recruit a HSE Manager on a pipework installation project in Hertfordshire on a 9-12 month contact basis for a start in November.     Key skills required for the HSE Manager:    
  • Translating site or contract-specific activities into effective Job Safety Analyses, or approved equivalent (e.g. Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS)), and Safety Task Assignments that ensure HSE protection requirements are met.
  • Being present at the Worksite when Contractor has employees (including sub and lower-tier employees) onsite work.
  • Coordinating operations with other contractors as to not increase hazards or hazardous situations.
  • Monitoring, identifying, assessing, and managing HSE hazards associated with the Work to support the consistent application of safe work methods.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable statutory acts, regulations, and codes of practice.
  • Ensuring that required training is conducted and documented for all personnel for whom Contractor is responsible.
  • Providing and ensuring that all personnel are supplied with and trained in the correct use, fitting, and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
  • Conducting HSE assessments of Work being performed in alignment with Leading Indicator requirements.
  • Conducting weekly safety meetings with employees.
  • Submitting a weekly report documenting HSE activities.
  • Must hold a NEBOSH
  • Experience on piping or pipework scope of works will be highly beneficial
