Controls and Instrumentation Engineer

Astute’s Power team is partnering with a leading energy generation company to recruit a Controls and Instrumentation Engineer to be based at their Energy from Waste site in Worchester.     The Controls and Instrumentation role comes with a salary of up to £63,000 + benefits. If you’re a HNC qualified C&I Engineer who has worked on heavy industrial plant, ideally with experience on CEMS and DCS equipment, then submit your CV to apply today. Responsibilities and duties of the C&I Engineer role Reporting to the Maintenance Manager you will:  
  • Ensure all control and instrumentation systems are correctly operated, maintained, tested, and calibrated in line with statutory and site requirements.
  • Lead and develop a team of C&I Technicians, providing technical direction, performance management, and ongoing training.
  • Maintain and optimise the site’s Distributed Control System (DCS) and Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), ensuring compliance with environmental and operational standards.
  • Plan, manage, and oversee maintenance and calibration contracts for specialist systems including DCS, CEMS, water treatment, and security systems.
  • Support audits, compliance activities, and procurement processes in collaboration with the Maintenance Manager.
  • Develop and implement obsolescence and cyber security strategies for control and instrumentation systems.
  • Provide fault diagnosis, emergency support, and cross-discipline technical assistance to maintain plant reliability and performance.
Professional qualifications   We are looking for someone with the following:
  • Minimum HNC (Higher National Certificate) or higher in Control & Instrumentation, Electrical, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least five years’ post-qualification experience in a C&I role within a power generation, process, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of DCS and CEMS systems, with proven hands-on troubleshooting and maintenance experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and external maintenance contractors.
  • Solid understanding of process control systems, safety standards, and compliance frameworks.

Responsibilities and duties of the Project Manager role Reporting to the Project Director you will:  
  • Degree-qualified in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Proven experience delivering large, multidisciplinary engineering projects within Energy from Waste, power generation, EPC, process plant, petrochemical, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience leading project teams and managing complex work packages, with responsibility for cost, schedule, quality, and risk.
  • Strong understanding of industrial process systems, engineering delivery, and project execution methodologies.
  • Commercially aware, with experience in contract management, supplier engagement, change control, and risk management.
  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Project management certification (APMP, PMI, IPMA or equivalent) is desirable. Experience with SAP or Energy from Waste projects would be advantageous.
Professional qualifications   We are looking for someone with the following:
  • Level 3 Mechanical Engineering qualification or time-served mechanical apprenticeship.
  • Proven experience carrying out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance, including fault-finding and repair activities.
  • Strong understanding of Safe Systems of Work, including risk assessments and permit-to-work processes.
  • Competence using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for recording maintenance activities.
  • Ability to liaise effectively with contractors, suppliers, and internal teams to support maintenance operations.

This Mechanical Engineer role comes with a salary of £55,000 - £62,000 per year plus benefits and has Monday to Friday working hours. If you’re an experienced Mechanical Technician or Engineer with a background in heavy process industries or defence, submit your CV to apply today.

 

Responsibilities and duties of the Mechanical Engineer role Reporting to the Maintenance Manager you will:
  • Oversee mechanical maintenance of plant equipment
  • Monitor rotating machinery and ensure safe operation
  • Coordinate shutdown and maintenance planning across disciplines
  • Maintain compliance with statutory inspections and documentation
  • Manage safety systems, lifting gear, and pressure systems
  • Support accident, incident and near-miss investigations
  • Lead mechanical personnel and manage related departmental duties
  • Review and recommend spare parts holdings
  • Set and manage the mechanical department budget
Professional qualifications We are looking for someone with the following:
  • Engineering background within power generation such as Energy from Waste, CCGT, Biomass, Oil, Coal, or marine engineering
  • Competency in relevant safety legislation and industry standards
  • 5+ years of relevant experience 
  • Familiarity with equipment inspections, safe systems of work, and technical documentation
