The Role

Our Client is a leading EPC in the renewable energy field and Power Generation sector, who are consistently bidding and gaining new projects in the Energy from Waste sector in the UK. Currently they have a requirement for a Lead Commissioning Engineers to lead a team of Engineers and Technicians throughout the commissioning of the project. We are looking for candidates with building services experience. 

As Lead Commissioning Engineer, you will bring demonstrable commissioning experience and practical skills to the commissioning team. Working closely with the Commissioning team, you will be responsible for planning, executing and documenting of commissioning and handover activities on the project and programme of works in a safe manner, fully in accordance with company processes, systems, procedures and specifications. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Working in collaboration with the construction team, ensuring that commissioning activities are planned safely and to required quality standards and specifications
  • Providing appropriate support throughout the commissioning phase of the project
  • Updating of commissioning documentation including site reports and assisting with O&M manuals
  • Carrying out and recording of all commissioning tests
  • Liaising with onsite subcontractors where necessary
  • Reporting to the Project Director and Commissioning Manager and updating relevant personnel on site progress 
  • Adhered to health and safety regulations and reporting any incidents appropriately.

Requirements:

  • Commissioning experience gained within Energy from Waste, Biomass, and Gasification projects. 
  • Proven track record in a similar role and ability to communicate well at all levels
  • Building Services experience
  • Ability to work well independently and as well as part of a team

Lead Commissioning Engineer (Boiler)

Astute’s Power team is partnering with a leading principal contractor in the Energy from Waste sector to recruit a Lead Commissioning Boiler Engineer on a contract basis for its West Midlands site from September 2026.   The Lead Commissioning Boiler Engineer role comes with a day rate of £600. Key skills required for the Lead Commissioning Boiler Engineer role  
  • Take ownership of boiler commissioning activities, ensuring delivery in line with project requirements, contractual obligations, and HSEQ standards.
  • Review, implement, and enforce HSEQ requirements during commissioning, ensuring all activities are carried out in accordance with RAMS, site standards, and applicable legislation
  • Take overall responsibility for commissioning the full boiler package, ensuring all systems are delivered safely, on time, and in line with contractual and technical requirements
  • Oversee and coordinate commissioning activities to ensure alignment with project contracts, schedules, budgets, and approved standards

The position will be on days only, working 12 hours, 7 days a week once in outage.    The Outage QA/QC Engineer roles come with an hourly rate of £40.00.   • Provide QA/QC oversight during vessel boxing-up activities, ensuring correct gasket installation, bolting procedures, torquing, and final closure compliance.
  • Monitor and inspect valve welding activities, confirming adherence to approved WPS/PQR, material traceability, welder qualifications, and NDT requirements.
  • Oversee welding works, ensuring compliance with welding procedures, pre/post-weld heat treatment requirements, and inspection hold points.
  • Oversee valve overhaul activities, verifying inspection records, component replacement, pressure testing, and correct reassembly/ installation.
  • Ensure all quality documentation, ITPs, weld records, NDT reports, and test certificates are completed and compiled accurately.
  • Liaise with site management, contractors, and client representatives on quality matters.
  • Raise and manage NCRs where required and ensure close-out of quality issues.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, compliance, and outage schedule requirements.
  • Must have p roven experience in QA/QC within power generation, heavy industry, or similar environments.
  • Must have s trong knowledge of welding standards, pressure systems, and mechanical inspection practices.

Astute’s Power team is partnering with a cable solutions provider to recruit a Project Manager for its site in Dunbar on a permanent basis.              Key skills  
  • Manage and oversee the execution to completion of the project.
  • Awareness to specific site characteristics (topography, landscape, environmental and ecological constraints, current infrastructure, sustainability, health and safety)
  • Work closely with the design and wider team to manage and develop any necessary Scope of Works, Division of Responsibilities, Employer and or Client Requirements and Technical Specifications for Onshore Cable works.
  • Interface extensively with the client’s offshore cable team to manage the interface of the cable landfall.
  • Actively manage to appointment any required subcontract requirements, specifically HHD/Civils.
  • Source, review, appoint any such required consultants and/or internal colleagues to develop and carry out pre-condition surveys.

  • Develop, maintain, and update Site System Time Schedules, integrating construction, M&E, and commissioning activities.
  • Monitor and report schedule performance using CPM and Float Management, identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Coordinate schedules across internal teams, subcontractors, clients, and consortium partners, resolving issues proactively.
  • Provide weekly/monthly progress reports, including S-curves, supporting the Construction Manager with on-site data collection.
  • Maintain an as-built schedule, comparing baseline vs actual progress, and recommend improvements to prevent delays.
  • Must hold a degree in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Must hold Project Scheduler experience in heavy/industrial sectors and projects, ideally EfW / Power generation.
