Data Architect - Contract - Onsite
For our direct client in the Greenwich, CT area we seek an experienced Data Architect consultant to support a greenfield data warehouse initiative. This engagement is focused on discovery, current-state assessment, and roadmap design, with selective pilot use cases to demonstrate value to key stakeholders and the executive team
Engagement Objectives
- Assess existing departmental data sources and silos
- Define a pragmatic data warehouse and analytics roadmap
- Establish a minimum viable data governance model
- Identify quick-win use cases that demonstrate business value
- Design a flexible architecture that can evolve toward AI/ML readiness
Key Responsibilities
Current-State Assessment

- Inventory and assess data across Oracle, SQL Server, AS/400 (archival), and departmental systems
- Identify gaps, redundancies, and integration challenges across departments
Target-State Architecture
-
- Design a centralized analytics architecture aligned primarily to the Microsoft/Azure ecosystem
- Provide recommendations for data warehousing approaches (cloud or hybrid, as appropriate)
- Outline high-level ETL / ELT patterns and data integration strategy
Data Governance

- Define a governance model, including data owners, stewards, and custodians by department
- Establish shared definitions for priority metrics and datasets
- Incorporate basic risk and security considerations aligned with required standards
Executive Enablement & Communication

- Translate technical concepts into clear, decision-oriented visuals
- Support executive briefings with roadmaps, options, and tradeoffs
Pilot & Quick Wins

- Identify 1–2 pilot analytics use cases using high-value datasets
- Define success metrics and implementation approach for early wins
Required Skills & Experience
Data Architecture
-
- Strong experience designing conceptual and logical data models
- Hands-on background with modern data warehousing and analytics platforms
- Experience working with hybrid and legacy environments
Microsoft Data Stack
-
- Working knowledge of Azure data services (e.g., Synapse/Fabric, Data Factory, Power BI)
- Familiarity with identity, access control, and role-based security concepts
Analytics & Reporting
- Experience enabling executive dashboards and operational reporting
- Understanding of semantic layers, KPIs, and shared metrics
Consulting & Stakeholder Skills

- Proven ability to conduct discovery-led engagements
- Strong communication skills with non-technical and executive stakeholders
- Comfortable operating within defined scope, timelines, and outcomes
Nice to Have
- Experience in multi-department or decentralized environments
- Exposure to AI/ML data readiness or analytics modernization initiatives
- Familiarity with tools such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Fabric Lakehouse
