Lead Engineer - Biogas

Astute’s Renewables Team is working exclusively with an established business who own and operate a gas to grid, anaerobic digestion plant and are looking to recruit a Lead Engineer for their site in the Northeast of Gloucestershire. The strategically important Lead Engineer role comes with a salary of up to £50,000, and company benefits package. If you’re an experienced Engineer who has worked in a heavy processing environment then submit your CV to apply today.                     Responsibilities and duties of the Lead Engineer role Reporting to the Operations Manager you will:  
  • Lead the day-to-day maintenance and engineering activities on the AD site
  • Ensure all engineering work complies with HSE regulations, company policies and site permits
  • Oversee mechanical, electrical and instrumentation systems including CHP engines, feedstock handling equipment, pumps, separators and be willing to be trained on the gas upgrading system
  • Implement and manage the site’s planned preventative program (PPM)
  • Diagnose and rectify breakdowns promptly to minimise downtime and production losses
  • Manage spare parts inventory and liaise with suppliers for repairs and replacements
  • Supervise and mentor a team of maintenance technicians and contractors
  • Act as the technical lead for all plant modifications and improvement projects
  • Support the commissioning of new systems or upgrades
  • Conduct risk assessments, issue permits to work and enforce safe working practices
  • Install and maintain new and existing plant equipment ensuring equipment inspection and calibration are carried out according to legal and manufacturer requirements
  • Ensure a high standard of work, maintain a clean and safe environment
  • Support the operations team and all ad hoc projects
  • Strong understanding a process control system (SCADA/PLC)
  • Other duties as required
Professional qualifications   We are looking for someone with the following:  
  • Relevant Engineering qualification (Electrical, Mechanical) and/or Experienced time served Engineer
  • IOSH
  • Telehandler licence desirable
  • Full UK Driving Licence
Personal skills   The Lead Engineer role would suit someone who has:  
  • A minimum of 2-3 years hands on experience working in anaerobic digestion or a similar processing environment
  • Be part of an on-call rota
  • Working knowledge of pneumatics, pumps, heating systems, hydraulic systems and other ancillary equipment
  • Experienced in using Maintenance Management System
  • Working at heights
  • Computer literate
  • Motivated self-starter

  • Have full accountability for the site; its compliance, profitability and managing all operational aspects on a daily basis
  • Managing the site effectively to promote a positive, health and safety focussed culture
  • Liaise with all relevant governing bodies when necessary and deal with any escalations
  • Communicating tasks, responsibilities and expected levels of performance including conducting annual performance reviews, identifying training and development needs and chairing team briefs at the required level
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with influential key internal and external stakeholders including customers, local government stakeholders and internal networks.
  • Manage the Environmental Permit and its conditions, the Odour Management Plan and all relevant certifications for the site
  • Monitor digestate levels and ensure PAS 110 compliance
  • Attend safety management meetings when necessary
  • Be very commercially aware, with overall management on incoming feedstock and to ensure optimal gas yield and as a result, the best returns
  • Work on a 4 on 4 off day shift rotation
  • Other duties are required
  Professional qualifications   We are looking for someone with the following:  
  • WAMITAB or willingness to work towards it
  • A relevant engineering degree is desired
  • NEBOSH or equivalent health & safety qualification
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  Personal skills   The Plant Manager role would suit someone who is:  
  • Prior experience working in anaerobic digestion or a similar, such as water treatment
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach, develop, and motivate teams
  • A problem-solver and team builder, capable of influencing a positive culture and driving operational improvements
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental compliance, with a demonstrable commitment to maintaining a zero-harm culture
  • Experience in budget management and cost control, including site profit and loss responsibility
  • Confident communicator with the ability to lead Toolbox Talks, team meetings, and provide clear operational updates
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and SCADA, CMMS or plant control systems

  • Assist in breakdown repairs of mechanical components and systems.

  Professional qualifications   We are looking for someone with the following:  
  • Recognized electrical engineering qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3, HNC, or equivalent)
  • 17th/18th Edition wiring regulations certified (desired)
  • Mechanical qualification or formal training (desired)
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  Personal skills   The Multiskilled Engineer role would suit someone who is:  
  • Proven experience in a similar multi-skilled engineering role in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills on electrical systems.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems and willingness to develop further.
  • Experience with PLCs (Siemens, Allen Bradley, Omron or similar) and industrial automation.
