Overview:
We’re seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Braillist to support students who are blind or visually impaired by transcribing and preparing educational materials in Braille and other accessible formats. The ideal candidate will work closely with teachers, vision specialists, and support staff to ensure all students have equitable access to instructional content.
Responsibilities:
Transcribe textbooks, worksheets, tests, and classroom materials into Braille, large print, or tactile graphics
Proofread Braille materials for accuracy and formatting consistency
Operate Braille embossers, tactile graphics equipment, and assistive technology software
Organize, label, and maintain a library of Braille and large-print instructional materials
Collaborate with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), classroom teachers, and staff to anticipate material needs
Support student access to technology and equipment related to Braille instruction and literacy
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to district, state, and federal accessibility standards
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; postsecondary coursework in Braille transcription or visual impairment preferred
Certification in Literary Braille Transcription from the Library of Congress (or ability to obtain)
Proficiency in Braille translation software (e.g., Duxbury, Braille2000)
Strong organizational, proofreading, and time-management skills
Experience working in a school or educational setting preferred
